About South Craven Explorers

Explorers is the final youth section in Scouts, covering the 14-17 age range. In South Craven we operate a District Explorer Unit drawing together Scouts from all the Groups within the District to continue their Scouting journey. The Unit also welcomes young people with no previous Scouting experience, so whatever your background, Explorers is for you!

Our programme covers weekly meetings on a Monday evening in different locations around the District, camps and activity days. In the Explorer section the young people work towards the top levels of the Scout Awards – Chief Scout’s Platinum and Diamond, and ultimately the King’s Scout Award. These are nationally recognised awards that also tie in directly to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme at all levels. As well as the main awards, there are plenty of Activity Badges to earn across a huge range of activities and loads of outdoor adventurous camps and days to enjoy. Explorers also have a Young Leader Scheme operates throughout the District, with a chance to help lead activities for the younger sections.

Explorers focuses heavily on Youth Shaped Scouting, putting the young people at the centre of programme planning and giving them opportunity to decide what activities and badges they want to do, as well as the chance to take the lead on running some of the activities themselves. Explorers is as much about developing young people as it is about traditional Scouting. So our programme has plenty of scope for learning and putting into practice leadership, teamworking and communication skills #Skills for Life.
